Boat Wiring Colors

Hello Kevin,

I am looking to find a boat wiring diagram to rewire my 1996 17 foot Key West boat. EzAcDc offers a full selection of boat wiring for your marine electrical project.

I will need the complete wiring schematics for this model. Do you have this information or can you tell me where I can find it online and print in order to start my repairs tomorrow?

Hi Marco,

I’m sorry, but we do not have a boat wiring diagram available for your boat and you will probably not find one.

But, this list of standard boat wiring colors for marine electrical should get you close. Most boat builders have been using this code or one very similar for over twenty years.

Custom Marine Electrical Panels?

Hi Kevin,

I found your sister operation, EzAcDc boat wiring on Ed Sherman’s site.

I am about to rewire my 42 foot ketch with new boat wiring and distribution/breaker panel.EzAcDc also has a complete kit to rewire you existing switch panels - a big part of any boat wiring project.

I have HF radio (35 A), water pump, sewage treatment (both 15A), VHF radio (8A)fridge (3A), plus the usual internal lights and external nav lights. No power winches or other serous current devices, other than of course the Yanmar 54 bhp starter battery and motor. I have a 300 AHr ships battery bank (3 x 100 AHr) and a 900 CCA starter battery.

Your marine electrical panels look interesting and also the boat wiring harnesses seem well made and should simplify installations.

Can EzAcDc supply panels suitable for larger numbers of circuits? What form do your harnesses take, can I get lengths custom made if I provide lengths?

Hi Johnson,

At this time our partner sites, EzAcDc and Boat Wiring Store, do not produce custom switch panels and boat wiring harnesses.

Usually, when expanding an EzAcDc system, our customers purchase a fully wired marine electrical switch panel and then purchase either an unloaded switch panel or an unwired switch panel to install in conjunction with the fully wired system.

This give them the ability to have a second switch panel made from the same material and same switch style. We offer a complete line of tinned boat wiring and marine electrical connectors so they can custom wire the second panel to their needs.

Bow Thruster Wiring

I am establishing a separate 24 volt battery bank in the bow of my 35 foot sailing boat for a bow thruster.

When I do the boat wiring, do I need to run a ground wire from my engine block to this bank? How large does the wire have to be?

Hi Bill,

In my opinion, all grounds should be connected together on a boat.

As for the size of the boat wiring, I would recommend no smaller than the largest wire connected to your existing battery bank.

Decipher the drawing?

Hi Kevin,

I’m working off the attached diagram and am wondering if you know where I can get a diagram for the boat wiring connections in the dash. I’m using a stern drive drawing were I will be bi-passing the ECM and Trim components. I swapped a 4.3 into a Shamrock (Inboard)

I can probably figure out most of the plug connections. My concern is the Red/Purple and the Purple wires on the Plug. Where are they connected in the dash?Shamrock boat wiring

Hi Phil,

The Red/Purple is the ignition feed wire. It provides constant power to the ignition switch. This is usually connected to the B post on your key switch. I would recommend adding an in-line fuse or circuit breaker near the key switch. According to your boat wiring diagram, it is protected by a 50 amp breaker on the engine and most key switches are only rated at 15 amps.

The purple wire is the ignition wire. This is usually connected to the I post on your key switch. Your instruments are also powered by this wire.

Bow Thruster Battery

Four Winns is one of the country's top builders of recreational boats.Hello Kevin,

I have a 2008 Four Winns V278. It has two batteries, ship systems and starter. The boat is equipped with a Guest 2614A Charger.

I am adding a bow thruster with a third battery. Can I connect it in parallel to the ship’s battery for charging? Also, would the charger be able to recharge both even if it takes longer?

What other alternatives do I have?

Hi Bob,

You can certainly connect a second battery in parallel with the ship’s battery for charging. Recovery time will increase.

An alternative would be to put the battery in the bow with the thruster and add a second charger, but you would lose the ability to have the engine charge the extra battery.
