Engine Room AC

Hi Kevin

I have a Maxum 4600 SCB and wanted to add an electrical outlet to my boat wiring in the engine room.

There appear to be several of the 110 volt circuit breakers that are not used. Is there any problem hooking up to one of them and routing the connection to the engine room? It would seem to be a simple matter of hooking up to each pole of the breaker. Maxum 4600

Is there anything that I should to be cautious about? Obviously I’ll disconnect power prior to mucking about with the shore power panel.

Thanks,

Sean

Hi Sean,

My only recommendation would be to use flexible cable for the boat wiring instead of rigid romex style.

Keep in mind that all AC components are not ignition protected and have the ability to cause an explosion in an engine room. This includes GFCI outlets.

Good luck,

Kevin

Kevin,

Thanks for the boat wiring help. The boat is a diesel so I’m not too concerned with explosive gas issues.

Where should the ground for the outlet source connect to?

Regards,

Sean

Hi Sean,

In your AC shore power panel, there will be a white AC Neutral bus (maybe 2 if you have dual shore power) and a green AC ground bus. Connect your ground and neutral here. The AC Hot from your outlet will connect to the breaker.
